The Game of Lot

Planning for uncertainty with tools for interactive simulation of urban development.

CHALLENGE
Create a tool for urban planning and dynamic zoning that acknowledges uncertainty and possible outcomes over time.

PROJECT
The Game of Lot, a Grasshopper script that allows a planner to establish zoning rules and explore a simulation of resulting changes to urban development.

The Game of Lot is a tool to help communities plan for resilience and future change.  The tool is a Grasshopper script that create an interactive and simulated version of a disaster recovery system of context-dependent zoning and grants, as proposed in earlier independent thesis.

The simple but recursive rules of the proposed game of recovery present a challenge to test using traditional methods of architecture and urban planning. Using computational methods, however, they become a relatively straightforward coding exercise. The script allows a user to create an adjustable grid of lots. By placing points within those lots, the user can mark them with positive or negative values, as well as indicate their vacant or occupied status. Python code, imported into the Grasshopper script, processes the lots according to the rules of the Game of Lot. The result is then continuously visualized in Rhino as a series of probable outcomes.
